Ah, teenagers. That wonderful age where we know absolutely everything and communicate through heavy exasperated sighs and eye rolls. My work has focused on those aged 13 and up.
FAQ:
Q: What do you work on with teens?
A: Well, all sorts of things really. Decision making, developing coping skills, and emotional regulation are major areas of focus since most other issues can fall under those (anger management, trauma, substance use, and etc).
Q: Do I need to/ can I be there while you talk to my child?
A: If you’d like you may, but please know that it may hinder your child opening up and getting the most out of the session. If needed we can check in at the end of the session as an update on what everyone is working on. We may even do a few family therapy sessions if needed.
Q: I want to know what my child is saying in session.
A: That’s not a question, but it’s ok- I know what you mean. The thing is, kids need confidentiality as much as adults do. It helps us feel safe, allows us to open up so we can do work in therapy without fear of judgement. Most parents want information so they can be better for their child. If they are unhappy, or struggling in school, parents want to help fix it. Free therapy tip- talk to your child. Regularly (not just after/ before session or getting called by the school). If they are in counseling, ask how you can help or what they are learning. If you have concerns, we can definitely talk about them. And know, if your child is in danger or is a danger to someone else then I will break confidentiality. Safety comes first.
