Individual Counseling- Adults

Individual Counseling is just that- individual. Just you and the counselor. This can be done as its own work, or in conjunction with couple’s counseling (such as when there are trauma or anger management issues you are struggling with that are interfering with you and your partner’s work).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can counseling help me?

A: The short answer is “Absolutely, if”. Counseling can be incredibly effective, if you are willing to do the work needed. If you want things to be different without having to change yourself, it’s probably going to be very frustrating. For example, someone may be struggling with anxiety symptoms (such as insomnia or panic attacks), but does not want to try different coping skills. To be clear, this is not the same as being wary of trying something new, or forgetting because it’s such a new habit. It’s wanting to reap the rewards of change without doing it. This may also be about being open to having difficult conversations or revelations. If you are willing to at least try, and are open to the process, you absolutely can be successful!

Q: How many times do I have to go?

A: You mean “how many times do I get to go?”! Hahaha. Honestly, this will depend on a variety of factors. Namely, what kind of work you are doing (are you just checking in for a tune up? Dealing with bereavement? Court ordered to complete 5 sessions?). Along those same lines, some issues take longer than others, and everyone is different. Your insurance may also be a factor (number of sessions provided). It is important to keep an open dialog about your expectations/ needs so everyone is on the same page.

Q: Do I have to lay down on a couch?

A: It’s a pretty comfy couch, so I would. But no, you don’t have to. The couch was one of the hallmarks of psychoanalytical (Freudian) therapy, which this is not. Cool furniture though.

Q: What happens in an appointment?

A: We talk, mostly. If it’s your first appointment, we often do an assessment of why you are coming in. If we’ve met before we will probably check in on how the week went, success/ difficulties implementing anything from the previous week, and continue building insight and/or practice skills.
